Acme Vegan Cookies

Welcome to the start of Acme Vegan Cookies (not the real name).  As you may have read in previous posts, Nixon and I are both vegan.  I’ve been vegetarian most of my life (from the age of 13).  Nixon jumped onto the veggie bandwagon not long after he met me.  He likes to pretend that I forced him into it when people ask us about it.  But the truth is, it was a natural progression for him.  He tried being vegetarian and was so for about a year when we both decided to become vegan.  In fact, it was his idea.  I had been vegan for a couple years in the past, and knew that I would go back to it eventually.  We have been vegan for over a year now and we love it!  We both agree that this is the lifestyle for us.  We have both noticed that we don’t enjoy many things the way we used to… Nixon no longer drinks soda, and neither of us drink much alcohol anymore.  It is rare that we have it once a month now.  We can’t believe that we don’t miss cheese either!  We were both cheese lovers when we first became vegan.   But we both feel great and want to share that feeling with the world!  We believe that it is very possible to enjoy food and be vegan!  This is where the idea of my cookies came from.

I started baking vegan cookies because I wanted something sweet to enjoy that was not only vegan but also nutritious…. My cookies are sweetened with agave and made with coconut oil.  Two wonderful foods for your body.  I also use whole wheat flour.  I do my best to make everything organic and local.  I’ve shared these cookies with friends and family and had a great response.  So… I decided I should expand!  We have a local farmers market here in town that starts in June.  So I put together my application and sent it in on Friday.  I am really hoping to get in.  This will give my cookie company great exposure locally and then I can focus on getting it out there even more.  Eventually, I would like to sell my cookies to health food stores such as Whole Foods.

I read a great book to help get me started on thinking like a cookie company – it is called One Smart Cookie and it is Mrs. Fields story on how she created her company.  It was a great read to get me excited and motivated… and she had some great ideas!  If I get into the farmers market, I will be walking around with samples.  If I really believe in my cookies, I can trust that once someone tries one, they will want to come back for more!  That was really the one thing that Debbie Fields did in the beginning to really help her business succeed.

I will hear by the beginning of May if I am part of the 2010 farmers market.  Cross your fingers!

Yeah! She is hitting the farmer’s market! That is great you already submitted your application. So much better than I who is doing all the talking, but not walking. I get so involved into the process that I second guess myself. I just need to put action forth! You make a great inspiration.

I can’t wait to hear about the progression.

When i looked up our local health food stores they had an application online and showed what is involved. Maybe it will help you see what may be involved for future submissions.

    Rock on!

Thanks for your comment! I sure hope I get into the market. It will be a good three month test of my business! I have so many ideas for the cookie company but I figured I should make one goal right now that can help me get to where I want to be. The farmers market may seem small but it’s a great way to test out my idea and get my product out there! For your venture – just make one goal right now – and once you’ve completed it – move onto the next… otherwise you may get overwhelmed and not actually get anything done (a big problem of mine).

Thanks for the application info! I think it may be very useful!

That is awesome :) …. I can’t bake cookies very well, so maybe you should release a cookies recipes book / ebook to do a little promo online :)

Anyway, please keep blogging about this so I can keep reading.

Hmmm…. a vegan cookies ebook. That is a definite possibility! If I get into the market, and my cookies are a big hit, I just may have to do that! Thanks for reading!

    Adrienne,

That’s pretty cool! I’d sure love to sample a vegan cookie. You’re making me crave cookies now… :(

I think that’s great: selling at the local farmer’s market is an excellent idea. I recently went to Reading Terminal Market in Philly and it was sooo exciting seeing all types of food everywhere. I had a cookie with fudge dripped on it. Pretty ridiculous haha.

Can’t wait to hear more. Not sure about a cookies ebook but maybe vegan desserts??

  6. Adrienne says:

Thanks Moon! Yes, I am also craving cookies. Luckily the ones I make are delicious AND nutritious! :)

I’m not quite versed in vegan baking that I could come out with a vegan desserts ebook but you never know… if this cookie company takes off – that may be a future idea for the business!

Oh so you have a vegan cookie store or you just sell them to retailers? Sound yum, although I’ve heard agave is not that great for you because it almost pure fructose. Lots debates on it, found this article on it http://www.rawfoodmedia.com/home/46-raw-food-related/113-agave-good-or-bad.html

Lots of raw foodies don’t use it.

    Girl Startup,

Right now, I don’t sell them to anyone. :) I am trying to get into the farmers market so that I can get the word out and if all goes well, I plan to sell to retailers.

I have also heard about agave. You are right, lots of debate. Thanks for the article!
