My boss asked my coworker to go over to his desk to show him how to attach an image to an email (wow, hard, right?). She walked over and began to show him how. She switched his view to thumbnails so he could see the images he was looking for, and when she went to his desktop, he had a bunch of photos of topless women. He said, “Oh wait, don’t look at those!” He is the owner of the company, so we kind of just laughed about it and went on with our business. What a douchebag.
On another occasion, this same gentleman brought a mug of “coffee” to a conference call at 10am. Another coworker commented that it looked like beer, so I leaned over and sniffed it. The boss saw me (he was just outside the door), screamed, and said, “Don’t! Don’t do that!” I had already done it. It was beer. He was drinking a beer. During a meeting. At 10am. The rest of the day, he kept giving me excuses about why he needed a beer…and how he knew he had a problem but his work was just too much without a buzz.

Oh, god. My company had a very strict (in my view, overly strict) approach to its IT rules, one of which was something to the effect of “no porn or anything like it.” Their policy was a strict zero-tolerance rule, and during my tenure a few officers in the firm were dismissed due to violations. In my mind, that’s a bit ridiculous – is it worth losing such an ostensibly valuable contributor for the sake of the rules? On the other hand, hearing about a company owner having porn on the desktop of his work computer… man!
Creepy tales but true. I have witnessed more mind twisting phenomenon.
Jay – Yeah, my work is the same way. Zero tolerance. There are people who have been fired out of nowhere – and none of us knew why. But you always wonder if it was something on their desktop!
